Journey

Michael Kitanda, a revered Ugandan jazz saxophonist and composer, has carved a niche by merging smooth jazz with the rich tapestry of Ugandan sounds. Born in Mulago, Kampala, Kitanda's early exposure to music was deeply influenced by his time at Omega Primary School, where he actively engaged with the school's brass band. The mentorship of his brother, Dr. Kagumba Andrew, introduced him to the realms of classical music and ethnomusicology at St. Joseph's Naggalama, shaping his dual appreciation for Western and African musical traditions. Kitanda has emerged as a standout figure in Uganda's dynamic jazz community, performing alongside esteemed bands such as Baxmba Waves, Janzi Band, and Qwela Band. His career highlights include sharing stages with international jazz luminaries like Richard Bona and Marcus Anderson, as well as collaborating with celebrated Ugandan artists such as Jose Chameleone and Maurice Kirya. In December 2024, Kitanda released "Christmas in Kampala," an album that breathes new life into holiday standards with a distinctive Ugandan jazz interpretation. May 2025 saw the launch of his single "Say No More," a precursor to his forthcoming album "Sax Appeal," expected to further explore and expand his musical boundaries. Kitanda's ongoing commitment to the evolution of Ugandan music is reflected through his energetic performances, collaborative projects, and contributions to music education, demonstrating a profound passion for both his craft and cultural heritage.
